With one of the most beautiful voices you are likely to have heard this year, Abbie Lathe may well have set a record for being the most laid back performer on the folk circuit. Her trademark informality and sense of the ridiculous gives her an accessibility rare in performers, and, assisted by The Lovelies, served up an evening of intimacy and charm.
Many of the songs are written by Abbie and co-vocalist Claudia, and are hauntingly sensitive, with beautifully crafted harmonies and poignant lyrics. There are some surprising covers in the program - 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' sung by Claudia with layer upon layer of harmony added by Abbie and the other band members is nothing short of stunning.
Of the traditional songs on offer, the opening of 'Stark Virna' sung by the band's violinist, Jane, has a bewitching quality that is hard to forget.
